The principle

GEO and AI Search Optimisation should not be measured by rankings or traffic alone. The real question is whether AI systems trigger answers, select your sources, cite them accurately, absorb your evidence, and represent your brand correctly across multiple answer engines. These ten benchmarks are how the field measures that.

The ten benchmarks, and what we measure

Each row is an industry KPI, its exact measure, where AI Knowledge Signal covers it, and how complete that coverage is. Benchmarks are grouped from opportunity through to authority.

Delivered Measured directly by a tool today Partial A proxy or related signal is provided Not yet Not measured today
Benchmark / KPI Exact measure Worked example Where AI Knowledge Signal covers it
Opportunity · 1AI Answer Trigger RateNot yet % of target prompts that produce an AI-generated answer / AI Overview. AI answers triggered ÷ total prompts tested × 100.Grossman et al. — AI Overviews generated for 51.5% of real-user queries. Test 100 prompts → 60 return an AI answer → 60% trigger rate. Not tracked. We measure presence within answers, not how often an answer is triggered for a query set.
Visibility · 2Citation Selection RateDelivered % of target prompts where your brand / domain is cited. Prompts where you are cited ÷ prompts with an AI answer × 100.Zhang, He & Yao — citation selection as a distinct outcome. Of 60 answered prompts, you're cited in 18 → 30% selection rate. AI Share of Voice (Prompt Insights) — mention, citation and recommendation rate across leading models for your buyer prompts.
Visibility · 3Citation Share of VoiceDelivered Your citations as a share of all citations in the answer set. Your citations ÷ total citations × 100, by engine, cluster and competitor.Zhang, He & Yao — citation breadth measure. The answer set cites 80 sources; 12 are yours → 15% share of voice. AI Share of Voice (you vs each competitor, per model) and YouTube Share of Voice (you vs competitors per keyword).
Prominence · 4Position-Adjusted Visibility / Impression ScoreNot yet Weighted share of answer text from your source, weighted higher for earlier positions. Credited words ÷ total answer words, position-weighted.Aggarwal et al. (GEO) — impression metrics. A 400-word answer credits 40 words to you, in the opening line → 10% base, weighted up for early position. Not tracked. We do not score word-level position of your source inside generated answers.
Influence · 5Citation Absorption / Influence ScoreNot yet How much a cited page shapes the answer — repeated reference, early appearance, paragraph coverage, semantic and n-gram overlap.Zhang, He & Yao — absorption / influence proxy. Your page is referenced 3×, appears in paragraph 1, with strong text overlap → high influence. Not tracked. We do not measure how much of the answer your page contributes.
Trust · 6Citation PrecisionPartial % of citations that actually support the claim they're attached to. Supportive citations ÷ citations checked × 100.Liu, Zhang & Liang — 74.5% supported on average. Of 10 citations checked, 8 back the sentence they're on → 80% precision. AI Share of Voice flags description accuracy and misrepresentation when AI names you — related, but not sentence-level citation auditing.
Trust · 7Citation Recall / Claim Support RateNot yet % of generated claims fully supported by citations. Fully supported sentences ÷ total sentences × 100.Liu, Zhang & Liang — 51.5% fully supported on average. Of 10 sentences in the answer, 5 are fully backed by a citation → 50% recall. Not tracked. We do not audit support for every sentence of a generated answer.
Technical · 8GEO Page Quality ScoreDelivered Page-level AI-citation readiness across pillars: metadata, freshness, semantic HTML, structured data, evidence, authority, linking, readability.Kumar & Palkhouski (GEO-16) — operating point ≥ 0.70. A page scores 0.74 with 13 pillar hits → clears the 0.70 bar. Score a URL, Write or Paste Text and Upload a Document — Framework Score /10 across the five framework dimensions, with per-dimension breakdown and fixes.
Technical · 9Crawlability / Fetchability RateDelivered % of target pages accessible to AI / search crawlers. Fetched pages ÷ pages tested × 100 — robots.txt, status, canonical, redirects, blocked AI crawlers.Grossman et al. — blocked AI crawlers are far less likely to be retrieved. Of 10 target pages, 9 fetch cleanly (1 blocks GPTBot) → 90% fetchable. Score a URL — the Crawlability & Technical Access dimension checks robots.txt, named-AI-crawler blocks, HTTP status, meta robots and canonical.
Authority · 10Earned Authority / Third-Party Citation SharePartial % of AI citations about you that come from third-party authoritative sources vs your own site. Third-party citations ÷ total citations mentioning you × 100.Chen et al.; Li & Sinnamon — bias toward earned media. Of 10 citations naming you, 7 are third-party (news, Reddit) → 70% earned. Score a URL scores on-page Authority, Evidence & Trust; AI Share of Voice shows who is named. We don't yet split owned vs earned third-party citation share.

How the five extension tools map to the benchmarks

The Chrome extension ships five tools. Three audit your own content for AI-citation readiness; two monitor how AI and YouTube already talk about you versus competitors.

Methodology & scope

How these benchmarks were selected The ten benchmarks are drawn from the peer-reviewed GEO and generative-search literature and from published industry frameworks — including Aggarwal et al. (GEO), Zhang, He & Yao (citation selection vs absorption), Liu, Zhang & Liang (verifiability), Grossman et al. (AI Overviews and crawlability), Kumar & Palkhouski (GEO-16), and Chen et al. and Li & Sinnamon on earned-media authority. Coverage status reflects what the AI Knowledge Signal tools measure today; gaps are stated rather than implied. For the primary sources, see Research & Evidence.
